Make the Most of Your Clinic Experience: Tip #2

If you’re signed up to attend a horsemanship clinic this year, there’s no doubt that you’ve invested a considerable amount of time and money in the experience. In the 28 years that he’s been teaching horsemanship, Clinton has come across all types of participants, from those who are seriously dedicated to bettering themselves and their horses to those who treat the experience like a good way to play hooky from work. In this mini-series, he shares four tips to ensure that you get the most out of the clinic you’re attending.

Tip #2: Check your emotions at the gate.

Emotions, aside from caring about your horse and fellow horsemen, have no place in horsemanship, and that’s especially true in a learning environment. Don’t be overly sensitive and wear your feelings on your sleeves.

As an instructor, I’m interested in helping you get results. I want to help you and your horse work better together and accomplish your goals. I want to help you become a better horseman. I can’t do that when I’m worried about tiptoeing around your feelings.

You’re going to make mistakes. You’ll be corrected in front of people. If you don’t make mistakes and if the instructor doesn’t point out how you can improve, you’ll be stuck in the same position you have been in. In fact, if the instructor doesn’t point out ways you can improve, you should be upset that you’re not getting your money’s worth. Horsemanship is a never-ending journey— there’s always something to learn and fine-tune, no matter who you are.
