Negotiating Gulleys With Your Horse

0903_01

Gulleys are one object on the trail that almost all horses initially fear. One of the main reasons gulleys are so frightening is because horses have poor depth perception. It is hard for a horse to tell how far away an object is from him or how deep an object is, particularly when it is close to him. Add to that the fact horses tend to feel claustrophobic when they’re in a tight, narrow space, and it’s no wonder that getting a horse to confidently cross or walk through a gully is difficult.

In the September No Worries Club digital download, Clinton works with a group of riders in the Arizona desert to help them introduce their horses to gulleys. As the group makes its way around the ranch they’re training out of, the gulleys get steeper and narrower, increasing the challenge.
