For the past 20 years, Clinton Anderson from Downunder Horsemanship has devoted his life to creating the best training tools and videos available to help bring his method to you. Join him on his weekly endeavors of tackling some of the most challenging situations with problem horses, and problem owners. This week, Clinton tells us about how he gives his horses a spa treatment with cold water after a ride.
Clinton begins the episode by telling us about how he’s been giving his horses spa treatments after working them for the past few years. He explains that he’s literally been putting them in a cold-water spa to help with recovery and longevity. Ice or cold-water therapy is one of the cheapest and greatest things for taking care of inflammation in a horse’s legs and joints. It’s the same mentality as athletes who take cold showers or ice baths.
Performance horses are professional athletes. You’ve got to take care of them—their physical needs, mental needs, etc. So, Clinton uses preventative methods, like the cold-water spa, to help reduce the risk of injury. Every day after he trains his horses, Clinton puts them in the spa and ices down their legs at 36 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 minutes. He does this every single day after he rides them. He uses the Cold Creek Therapeutic Equine spa that was invented by Randy Massey.
Clinton then shows us the spa and how to use it. The horse is outfitted in a diaper to collect any manure and then walked into the spa. There is rubber on the spa’s sides and on the floor, with holes on the bottom for air bubbles to come through. Once you bring the horse in, you close the doors, which are sealed so no water can leak out. The Cold Creek spa that Clinton uses is unique in that it is programmed and completely automated. All you need to do is enter the horse’s name and the depth of the water and the spa takes care of the rest. You want the horse’s legs, from their knees and hocks down to be submerged in the cold water. Once you select the correct depth of water, you can set the time and just press start. Everything is then taken care of on its own. The screen will also tell you if there are any filters that need to be changed.
The tank itself is marine grade stainless steel and there’s a plastic tank inside so that it won’t corrode over time. The chiller brings the temperature of the water down. Clinton tells his audience that his favorite thing about the design is that it’s fairly straightforward and requires no specialized knowledge to operate it. Plus, all the parts are replaceable and the system itself is even portable.
Clinton then tells us that while this horse spa is a bit of an investment, it can save you a lot of money on vet bills over the years. It doesn’t matter what kind of horse you have; the machine can have a huge difference on their health and longevity. For taking care of your horses and giving them what they need to avoid injury and make the most out of their performance the cold-water spa is absolutely phenomenal.
Clinton Anderson has spent the past 20 years of his life devoting his time to creating the best training tools and videos available to horsemen all over the world. Unfortunately, you can’t bring your TV into the arena to watch videos. That’s why Clinton and his team have been hard at work developing a new platform to deliver the training in a whole new way, a way that brings 20 years of horsemanship and puts it in the palm of your hand. Now, you can access the mobile method and get everything at the touch of a finger.
