“Ian Francis used to tell me, ‘Training a horse is all about putting him in a mental or physical bind and allowing him to figure out the puzzle.’ The only way the horse can work on figuring out the puzzle is if he’s using the thinking side of his brain and is relaxed. If a horse is using the reactive side of his brain and not tuned in to you, he’s not going to pay any attention to what you’re asking him to do,” Clinton says.

In a bonus segment to the third training session in the Performance Horses: Reined Cow Horse series, Clinton explains the importance of ensuring your horse is focused on the puzzle you’re asking him to solve and not the trouble or the correction.
